Garrun Trips Bowls Charity Day sees success at the Killarney Country Club

HOUGHTON – The annual Garrun Trips Bowls Charity Day was held at the Killarney Country Club.

The annual Garrun Trips Bowls Charity Day, which is now in its 19th year was a huge success at the Killarney Country Club.

It was a day that saw about 144 women of various bowls clubs around Gauteng compete for the love of charity.

Shiela Shear the main organiser of the tournament and Carol Alexander also an organiser of the event.

The money that the women paid to enter the tournament will be shared among three worthy causes, namely, CHOC, Hospice and Hatzolah.

The Garrun Group has been sponsoring the event for the past 19 years. Alison van Niekerk, marketing and communications manager for the company said the group felt extremely happy sponsoring the event and planned to continue doing so in the future. “It is great to know that the beneficiaries of the tournament do great work,” said Van Niekerk.

“The work that the three beneficiaries of the tournament do is just great; I love that they help people regardless of their race and gender,” commented Carol Alexander, one of the organisers of the event.

According to Alexander, last year the event raised R60 000 which was paid to the three beneficiaries and this year they are hoping to raise more.

A representative of Disability Bowls, Desiree Levin, who was also part of the tournament, said she loved the fact that bowls allowed the disabled to compete against the able-bodied. “I have been playing bowls for the last 17 years and have only been in a wheelchair for eight of these years. It feels great that I can still play. I love the skill that a game of bowls has,” said Levin, who added that it was important for people to remember that you are only as disabled as you allow your mind to perceive, especially in a game of lawn bowls.
