UPDATE: Shootout in Rosebank, corner Jan Smuts and 7th Avenue

ROSEBANK -  There has been a shootout between police and suspects, corner Jan Smuts and 7th Avenues. 

UPDATE: A case of assault has been opened against a group of men after they were involved in a shootout in Rosebank on the morning of 22 April.

A group of men allegedly assaulted  another group of men and police officers before fleeing the scene.

Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe, spokesperson for the Rosebank Police Station told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that charges were being opened against a group of men after an altercation between another group of men and police officers at the scene.

Mdletshe said that warning shots had been fired by the police officer present in order to break up the exchange between the men. Mdletshe added that some people had fled the scene and they would be asking the public to keep an eye out for the vehicle although he was unsure of its exact details at present.

Lee Ray Peters, one of the men who have opened a case of assault, told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that he and a group of friends were buying shoes at Shelflife shoe store on Keyes Avenue when a group of about fifteen men began chasing them. The men apparently had four guns with them.

“There were four guns, and then they were shooting in the sky so then after that we react and we fight them and then we came here [Rosebank Police Station] to lay a charge.”

Peters also added that one of the men who had charges laid against him was already wanted by the police.

 

INITIAL REPORT: According to Ward 117 Councillor Tim Truluck, there is a police helicopter hovering above the scene however, it is still unclear what happened.

Ashraf Muhammad, founder of Helpsa.org said Cortec attended the scene and said it was reported that a group of males were shooting at each other. “Police controlled the situation and arrests was made,” Muhammad posted on social media.
