JUST IN: Police fire stun grenades to disperse crowds at Gupta compound

SAXONWOLD - JMPD monitor the situation outside the Gupta house in Saxonwold.

Police had to fire stun grenades to disperse clashing protesters at the Gupta compound in Saxonwold. Members of the Black First Land First (BLF) who are there to defend the Gupta family clashed with anti-Zuma protesters.

Initial story

A crowd of people has gathered outside the Gupta residence on Friday morning with signs calling for President Jacob Zuma to be removed.

A woman who did not want to be named had been standing outside the Gupta house since early this morning. She said, “I think there are a few legs of this corruption and I think the Guptas have enabled Zuma to do what he has done. I think it’s important to protest and I think it’s important to do it where you think it matters.”

Many cars could be heard hooting for protesters as they passed by.

Alexandra Savenye-Terblanche, a matriculant, took the day off of school so that she could protest outside the Gupta house. “I’m not very hopeful that anything will happen but I think it’s important for them to know that there are people who believe they should go.”

Joseph Savenye-Terblanche said, “I believe that someone needs to say something, someone needs to come out. Whether it does anything or it doesn’t do anything, I think there has to be some form of commitment from the people to show that they are unhappy.”

A Metro police vehicle was situated outside the house with a few officers present. Wayne Minnaar, the spokesperson for the JMPD said they were just there to monitor the situation as they had received reports that there would be a protest outside the house.
