Two suspects arrested for fraud

PARKVIEW – They allegedly persuaded a business owner to buy non-existent helmets by pretending to have links with the defence force.

Parkview police arrested two confidence trickster suspects recently in connection with a R247 000 fraud that happened late last year.

“An investigation led to two [men] being arrested for fraud. It is alleged that the suspects sent an email to a company and pretended to be from the South African National Defence Force. The email had an SANDF logo,” said Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for Parkview Police Station.

She said the owner of the Dunkeld West-based company deposited the R247 000 into a bank account after the suspects allegedly sent a falsified quotation for 250 non-existent helmets. The suspects confirmed, via email, that they had received the money but did not deliver the helmets as promised.

They were arrested in Yeoville and Hillbrow by Detective-Sergeant Timmy Rikhotso and Detective-Constable Godfrey Rasebokola of Parkview Police Station. Parkview head of detectives Lieutenant-Colonel George Muhlarhi urged other businesses that were scammed in a similar fashion to come forward.

The two suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.

Details: Detective Sergeant Timmy Rikhotso 011 067 6016; 082 810 4572.
