It’s all gold in Jozi
JOBURG – England-based duo records their latest album in trendy Johannesburg.
Across the pond and into Johannesburg city, an English band has completed their latest album right here in Johannesburg.
Goldfrapp, the band consisting of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, has released its seventh album and is keen to reveal a new single titled Anymore.
While the release of the newest album by the popular English band is very exciting for fans, it is especially exciting for South Africans because this is the first album that has been produced locally, by the Johannesburg recording label, Gallo Records South Africa.
The album, Silver Eye, follows the release of the band’s previous album in 2013 and now, four years later the band is ecstatic about the sound of its newest offering.
Featuring strident strands of underground electronica, sensual melody and metal machine pop at its core, the new single is an assertive return from the uncompromising duo.
Goldfrapp explained the sound progression from their previous album to their latest and how they reached it. “We’ve never liked repeating ourselves. Often we react to things we’ve just done. We like the spontaneity of not knowing,” said Gregory.
“It’s only through the process that we start to figure out what it is. The fans who have stuck with us are the ones who embrace that idea and are excited by the thought that they don’t know quite what to expect next.”
On the writing process, Gregory commented, “I think writing an album is like being lost in a wood. You’re trying to figure out an interesting path. You don’t know whether it’s going to be a dead-end or somewhere interesting and you never know when to stop because around the corner some beautiful vista might open up.”
With the local experience having taken place in Johannesburg, maybe the internationally successful band will return for more time in the City of Gold.
