Police officers stand firm against bribery

JOBURG - Police nab robbers who tried to bribe their way

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun released a statement saying Metro police officers arrested four armed robbers who allegedly tried to bribe their way out of a routine stop-and-search on the eastern side of the inner city.

Sun said the officers rejected the bribe. “During the search [on the evening of 22 January, Metro police officers] discovered two bags containing two illegal firearms, ammunition, laptops, cellphones and other electrical accessories,” he said.

“On further investigation, it was discovered that the suspects had, earlier in the day, [allegedly] robbed a well-known electronics chain store in the Heidelberg area.

“The suspects were arrested and taken to the Jeppe Police Station where they were charged with armed robbery, possession of stolen goods and an illegal firearm and ammunition.”

The MMC said he commends the officers for their quick reactions and for standing firm against corruption. “It is because of their integrity and professionalism that there are now four less armed and dangerous criminals within our city.”

Towards the end of last year, Sun caught a Metro police officer, red-handed, taking a bribe in Braamfontein. The MMC had the officer arrested on charges of corruption. He had said that he would stand with officers who prove their integrity but would be the first to point out an officer who does not.

Sun also launched an anti-corruption ambassador programme, which encourages both residents and public servants within the department to take a stand against corruption.
