Woman loses R33 000

ALEXANDRA – Woman pays dearly after falling prey to a scam.

A woman was the victim of a scam by a female suspect that cost her R33 000 – this after the suspect told her that she had won R150 000.

The incident happened at Pan Africa Mall on 27 October this year. According to Alex Police spokesperson, Captain Allie Kodisang, the victim was at the entrance of Melrose Arch when she met the unknown suspect who told her that she had won R150 000. After convincing her of the ‘win’ the suspect told the complainant to go with her to a bank to withdraw the money.

The two went by taxi to the mall and on arrival, the suspect asked for and was given Absa and FNB bank cards by the complainant. The suspect inserted them into an ATM and asked the complainant to punch in her pin codes which she did. Somehow, without the complainant observing, the suspect withdrew and took R24 000 from the complainant’s FNB account and R9 000 from the Absa account.

She then handed the victim a brown envelope and told her not to open it until she got home. They then separated.

The contents of the envelope were not disclosed.

Police are investigating the matter.
