Suspects arrested for attempted hijack

ROSEBANK – Good Samaritan gets taken for a ride when offering a lift to strangers.

Two suspects were arrested on 20 September by Parkview police officers after they allegedly attempted to hijack a vehicle on the corner of Sutherland Avenue and 1st Avenue West in Parktown North.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko of Parkview Police Station said, “A driver of a Honda Accent 1998 model was allegedly driving along 4th Avenue in Melville when she saw a male and a female hiking. Being a Good Samaritan, she stopped to offer a lift and the two said they were headed to Emmarentia.”

According to Sibeko, the driver of the vehicle then informed the suspects that she was on her way to fetch her fiancé, who was in Rosebank at the time. “The driver disclosed to the suspects that she was not familiar with Rosebank and, therefore, needed assistance with directions to get to the suburb. The male suspect then offered to direct her until they reached Rosebank.

“The male suspect allegedly pulled up the handbrake while the car was in motion and pointed a knife at the complainant’s neck. She was then instructed to get out of the car,” explained Sibeko.

“The complainant started screaming and another car stopped and the driver called the police which led to the suspects being arrested.”

Both suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempted hijacking soon.
