Man drives car into bank’s headquarters

ROSEBANK – A man drives into a glass door of a building causing damage to property.

A 48-year-old male has appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court after driving into a glass door of the Standard Bank headquarters on Baker Street in Rosebank on the night of 13 September.

According to police, the suspect rammed his vehicle into the building for reasons unknown, damaging private property. When police arrived at the scene and attempted an arrest, the suspect failed to co-operate.

“The man has been charged with malicious damage to property and common assault,” said Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe, Rosebank Police Station spokesperson. “Investigations are still ongoing.”

Speculation is rife that the suspect was under the influence; and that he is a relative of an employee at the bank. However, police could not confirm any of these allegations.

Ross Linstrom of Standard Bank said they are grateful that no injuries were sustained during the incident and he applauded the security services for acting swiftly. “The damage to property was minimal and there were no disruptions to the building or operations.”

He added that the financial giant was co-operating with police investigations.
