Department of Home Affairs extended its Smart ID card programme

KILLARNEY - Department of Home Affairs partners with banks to extended Smart ID card programme

The Department of Home Affairs has extended its Smart ID card programme to Standard Bank Killarney Mall, allowing residents to avoid queues by making their applications online.

In conjunction with three other banks, Absa, First National Bank and Nedbank, Standard Bank is participating in a pilot programme to provide an online application service for smart ID cards and passports.

The department said that following the success of the project, it planned to expand it to more branches by the end of October.

Ross Linstrom of Standard Bank, agreed with home affairs and said that since May this year, when the pilot phase of the rollout went live, it has been a success and the future is looking bright for this public-private sector collaboration. “The service is easy, efficient and convenient,” said Linstrom.

“While the application and appointment process is made online, a branch visit is mandatory for the capture and verification of your biometric details [photos, fingerprints and signature].”

According to the department, since the partnership began in April with various bank branches, a total of 35 751 applications were submitted through the eHome Affairs system.

Customers who are 16 years and older are encouraged to make use of the service by making their appointments and applications online.
