Education Department’s R6.8m fraud alleged mastermind bust

JOBURG – The Hawks have nabbed an alleged fraudster.

Gauteng Hawks’ Specialised Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Johannesburg recently nabbed the National Department of Basic Education’s alleged fraud mastermind.

The 34-year-old human resource practitioner, Kenneth Maredi Mothiang, is accused of defrauding the department of about R5 million in a ‘ghost employee’ scam. According to Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu of the Hawks, the accused was also allegedly linked to finance and Internet fraud where the department suffered an additional R1.8 million loss between 2014 and last year.

Mothiang was arrested at his hiding place in Centurion on 28 July. He briefly appeared before the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court the next day and was remanded in custody.

His case was postponed to 5 August where he will make a formal bail application.

More arrests are imminent, promised Mulamu.
