Metrobus strike leaves commuters stranded

JOHANNESBURG – No Metrobus service throughout the city.

According to spokesperson for Metrobus, Ester Dreyer, it is a blue Monday for commuters who use the Metrobus, as the suspension of bus services in all routes throughout Johannesburg has left them stranded.

Dreyer said, “We suspended our services for the sake of passenger safety.”

She explained that the bus services have been interrupted since Friday.

According to her, bus drivers downed tools and started protesting outside Metrobus offices from about 10.30am and continued right up until midnight on 8 July.

She said the drivers are unhappy about three issues, but said she cannot reveal the details at this stage. Talks between the employer and striking workers are expected to get underway soon.

Dreyer has asked commuters to make alternative transport arrangements. At this stage, it is not yet clear as to how long the strike will continue.
