D-day for Pistorius

JOBURG – Oscar Pistorius to be sentenced today for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Update: 10.30am, 6 July – The world has been shocked once again after Judge Thokozile Masipa in the High Court in Pretoria has sentenced Oscar Pistorius to only six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on 14 February, 2013.

Judge Thokozile Masipa said he was not likely to reoffend.

The public were quick to show their disappointment with the sentence.

The final chapter of Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial will unfold this morning.

All eyes will be on Judge Thokozile Masipa at the North Gauteng High Court who will sentence Oscar Pistorius for the second time. In 2014 judge Masipa found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp and sentenced him to five years in jail.

Pistorius only served one year and was released on parole in 2015 but his limited freedom was short lived in December when the Supreme Court of Appeal overturned Masipa’s ruling and found Pistorius guilty of murder.

Murder sentencing arguments were completed in June. The State is pushing for the minimum murder sentence of 15 years while the defence wants a non-custodial sentence.

Below are some of the views from people on twitter on the sentencing of Pistorius:
