Ready to lead Ward 90

CRAIGHALL PARK – DA Ward 90 candidate councillor Martin Williams is no stranger to community work and believes previous community work has prepared him to take on the new role.

Martin Williams, the DA candidate for Ward 90 in the 3 August local government elections is an active member of the community he aims to serve.

A retired editor of The Citizen newspaper, Williams was on the local ward committee before being asked by the DA in February last year to work as a proportional representation list councillor in Lenasia South. He has also been a member of Craigpark Residents Association executive committee.

Having lived in the area for more than 20 years, Williams said he was familiar with the changing needs and challenges in Ward 90. He said he believes in paying attention to residents while drawing on the experience and support of colleagues and officials, past and present.

“A councillor is, above all, a servant of the people. We should never forget that,” he said.

In serving residents, a councillor provides the connection between the City of Johannesburg and residents associations, civic organisations and related non-governmental organisations. “As councillor, I shall be even more involved in the community than I have been up to now. I’ll be providing feedback and information in multiple ways, including the invaluable Caxton newspapers in the ward; the Rosebank Killarney Gazette and the Sandton Chronicle.

“There will also be, of course, public meetings, but the way we communicate has changed over the years. I’ll step up the amount of communication that happens via e-mail, WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and regular electronic newsletters.”

Williams said he would, in future, provide more information on projects in the pipeline, including resurfacing of roads and the long-awaited upgrade of the congested Conrad Drive bridge.

He said the DA had been campaigning for the renewal of the bridge for more than a decade and there was money allocated for the project in the 2016/17 financial year in the City’s Integrated Development Plan.

Ward 90 includes the following suburbs, or parts thereof: Clynton, Craighall, Craighall Park, Dunkeld, Dunkeld West, Glenadrienne, Hurlingham, Hyde Park, Illovo, Melrose, Parkmore, Riepen Park and Sandhurst.
