KES pupil to fly school’s flag high in France

HOUGHTON - KES pupil shines at essay writing competition.

Tyson Mtshali, a pupil of King Edward VII School, made his school proud following his impressive performance in the Delville Wood Essay Writing Competition.

The Grade 11 pupil came third in the competition and, as a result, was selected to represent the school in France later in the year to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the Battle of Delville Wood.

Ivor Rimmer of the South African Delville Wood Commemorative Museum Trust visited the school to congratulate Mtshali on his achievement.

The Battle of Delville Wood was a series of military engagements which took place in Longueval, Somme, in France between British and German soldiers and saw the first South African Infantry Brigade fighting under the British and take on its first decisive major engagement during WWI.
