LETTER: Heartwarming gesture – Student shares an Uber with a 75-year-old

ILLOVO – Elderly woman touched by young man's kindness.

75-year-old anonymous from Illovo writes:

I would like to most heartily thank the young marketing student who came to our rescue on 3 May.

Your courtesy and generosity is much appreciated and is a lesson to us all.

I live on Oxford Road not far from the Rosebank Mall and catch the mini taxi there and back. On that afternoon, I was waiting for a taxi to stop near the corner of Oxford Road and Jellicoe Avenue. Despite being half-full no taxi stopped. After a long wait, I asked a young man if he could hail a taxi for me. The same result, no taxi stopped. He asked where I lived and offered to call an Uber cab. He asked me what my taxi fare was and offered to pay the difference. I paid him in full, however, and we waited for the cab. At the same time a very old lady was struggling to get her shopping cart onto the pavement from the road. We asked her where she lived and she also lived along Oxford Road.

In the interim the cab arrived, we both got in. The student admonished the cab driver to take care of us and we both arrived home under five minutes.

Whoever you are, I think that you are a shining example of courtesy and kindness.
