Comedic acts to take to the stage in aid of cancer

Comedians come together to raise laughs and money for childhood cancer.

Seven acclaimed comedians, including a childhood cancer survivor, will take to the stage in a comedy show later this year in support of the Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC).

The show, which will include comedian and cancer survivor, Craig Caldwell, will take part in Laughing Matters comedy at the Scarlet Ribbon in Greenstone on 1 July from 8pm to raise funds for the cancer association.

Caldwell explained his journey with childhood cancer, which was discovered after a friend punched him at school, resulting in him being admitted to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He was diagnosed with bone cancer and admitted to ward 294, which is for young cancer patients.

“Ward 294 was a happy place and the presence of CHOC was [and still is] truly felt in this ward; it is child-friendly, the medical staff are friendly and you are with children who are suffering with you and make the journey less lonely,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell added that it was for this reason that the public needed to support the fundraiser, saying it was a good way to give back to the community.

Other performers at the comedy event will include Mel Miller, David Levinsohn, Hannes Brummer, Lihle Msimang and Nathaneal Davids.

The foundation is focused on providing comprehensive countrywide support for children living with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders and their families.
