Lions roar to victory

JOBURG - HALF- centuries by Stephen Cook and Alviro Petersen helped the bizhub Highveld Lions complete a comprehensive victory over the Cape Cobra, to clinch the Momentum One Day Cup tittle at Newlands on 28 February.

THE half-centuries by Stephen Cook and Alviro Petersen helped Highveld Lions score a comprehensive victory over the Cape Cobras to clinch the Momentum One Day Cup at Newlands.

Lions went into the match on the back of an emphatic eight-wicket victory against Chevrolet Warriors and have been in great form under the guidance of coach Geoffrey Toyana.

Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat congratulated the Johannesburg-based side on their victory and thanked Momentum for their continued support. “Congratulations to all the franchises for, once again, making this a well-fought competition; and particularly to the Lions, for deservedly being the Momentum champions,” he said.

“We are delighted to see players doing well for their franchise as they develop through to international level. The Momentum Cup makes a significant contribution, and the recent ODI success by the Proteas against both India and England are a testimony to this cup,” said Lorgat.

Although they did share the cup with the Cobras in the 2012/13 season, this is the first title for the Lions since the 2003/04 season.
