Back to basics for Rabada

JOBURG - Kagiso Rabada believes that despite all the success he has had with the South African Test team, doing the basics right is still the key for him.

Proteas bowling sensation, Kagiso Rabada, believes that despite all the success he had against England in the Test series, getting the basics right will be key in the limited overs series against England at home.

Speaking to reporters at the launch of the annual PinkDrive One Day International match at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, Rabada said the transition from the longer format to the shorter one would not be that easy, and getting the simple things right will be key.

“One day cricket is obviously different as there is a lot more intensity,” he said.

“You get to play on flatter wickets which are not going to be as challenging as in Test cricket. You don’t have to worry about wickets deteriorating.”

When asked about having to adjust his bowling lines in the shorter format, the former St Stithians Boys College pupil said, “In the shorter version batsmen are trying to line you up, you have to keep them guessing all the time with variations in your spells.”

The 20-year-old fast bowler said he was aware of the fact that he would be rested at some point to prolong his career as a fast bowler. “We are always checking our workloads as bowlers… We have a great medical team and I am sure they will give me a rest when required,” added Rabada.

His teammate, Quinton de Kock who is also one of the most promising young stars for South Africa, said he was pleased to see his longtime friend doing so well. “We grew up playing together,” he said.

“It is great to see an old mate of mine doing so well for himself and I am happy for him.”

The South African limited overs side will be looking for consistency when they take on England in five ODIs and two T20 matches.
