Joburg composer is number one

JOBURG - South Africa’s newest classical sensation, Caroline Leisegang has just released her debut album of piano compositions titled Oyeblikk.

The coolest new addition to the cultured world of classical music, Leisegang is also one of the countries youngest classical composers ever to release an album penned entirely by ear, raising the bar not only at home, but in the rest of the musical world.

The Joburg North resident was a student of the prestigious Trinity Music College in London, has worked alongside some of the finest classical and score composers and began writing her album at the age of 23.

Obsessed with her Norwegian ancestry, Oyeblikk translates to the English word ‘moments’ and is emblematic of her state of mind when writing pieces in either her London or Johannesburg home. Inspired at large by her battle with the weather patterns of the cities she lived in, this series of ‘moments’ came into being.

Leisegang is now, at 25, back in South Africa and has released her debut album in her home country. The young composer was signed to Sony digital and reached number one on the iTunes classical charts, and has just been selected by iTunes as the winner of the Best Of 2015 Award for Best Classical Album for this year.

This achievement is fantastic news for the first-time composer, having released her album only two months ago to critical acclaim in the media.

Since debuting at number one on the iTunes chart on release date, the album has since held on to top positions, making Leisegang one of the most watched classical artists around.
