Gaga for golf over the festive season

PARKVIEW - The Parkview Golf Course is an integral part of the suburbs around it, and next year the course will celebrate its centenary.

The 18-hole, par 72 parklands course is admired for the condition of its fairways and greens, its well-appointed clubhouse and the fellowship among members.

While the popular golf club forms an important part of the community today, it took a while to reach its current glory and boasts a rich history. The club opened in 1916 with almost 200 members. Bobby Locke joined the club in 1936 after winning both the SA Amateur and the SA Open at Parkview in 1935.

Springbok golfer Dave Symons joined the club in 1953 and was club champion on no fewer than 16 occasions. He represented South Africa 15 times and won the SA Amateur in 1967.

One of the most influential players to join the club was the late Eric Sturgess, in 1954, who won two Wimbledon tennis titles and was SA Tennis Singles champion 11 times.

In the true spirit of Christmas, the Parkview Golf Club would like to unite golfers from a number of clubs across the province and share in the historical significance of the club. The offer, valid from 14 December to 11 January next year, is only R250 for 18 holes and is open to members of Bryanston Country Club, Country Club Johannesburg, Copperleaf Golf and Country Estate, Ebotse Golf Club, Glendower Golf Club, Houghton Golf Club, Kyalami Country Club, Pretoria Country Club, Randpark Golf Club, Royal Johannesburg, Kensington Golf Club and Wanderers Golf Club.

“Golfers need to book and produce their membership cards on arrival,” said Parkview Golf Club director, Jerry Fraser.

“The offer to play at Parkview is bound to be extremely popular.”
