New Acropolis opens in Braamfontein

BRAAMFONTEIN – New Acropolis is an international non-profit cultural association that has a philosophical, cultural and social approach to life and a number of branches in 60 countries. In July 2015, they opened a branch in Braamfontein.

The association was founded with the purpose of promoting the study of philosophy as a means to incorporate science, arts, ethics and metaphysics to achieve global human development.

Director at New Acropolis, Guy Hazon explained, “There are different virtues that a person can follow, and the idea is that if you follow these virtues in your life, you develop a lifestyle of betterment and of being a better person.”

So how do you learn these virtues? That’s where New Acropolis steps in. Hazon explained that ‘students of the school’ learn about different philosophies and cultures from around the world, from the Far East and South America, Hinduism to the Stoics. “We try to take the best from every culture,” he added.

In addition to this, New Acropolis does a number of cultural and volunteer activities – from yoga to self-defence courses – and there is even a number of youth development programmes that are involved in local high schools.

Although the association has a branch in Ferndale, Hazon mentioned that the idea of opening a branch in Braamfontein came about due to the growing interest and youth in the area. “You see, the type of people that are here have such an interest, an interest in reading and expanding, and the openness is phenomenal.”

New Acropolis will be hosting an open discussion group on how the youth today feels about the world, and how they feel rhey can make it better. This discussion will take place on 27 November at 7pm at The Art of Movement, 101 Barry Hertzog Avenue, Emmarentia.

This discussion will take place again at the New Acropolis’ new location in Braamfontein on 19 January at 7pm on the 12th Floor of Orion House, 49 Jorissen Street.

The association will also be hosting an African Philosophy Symposium to celebrate World Philosophy Day. The event will explore different African philosophies and cultures. It is taking place on 3 December at 7pm on the 12th Floor of Orion House, 49 Jorissen Street.
