JOBURG – The South African team represented by the University of Zululand at the Enactus World Cup, which took place at the Sandton Convention Centre, performed well and achieved a semifinal round placement.

The United Kingdom team was awarded the title of Enactus World Champion for their projects that address sanitation, clean water and education challenges in Kenya.

Enactus is an international non-profit organisation that brings together students and academic and business leaders. Annually, the Enactus World Cup showcases projects which are focused on improving the standard of living for communities through business innovation.

Linda Thompson, Enactus World Cup media liaison, said the South African team brought an incredible atmosphere to the event with singing, dancing and festivities throughout the event.

The sponsors included KPMG, Absa, Coca-Cola, Massmart/Walmart, Unilever, MTN Foundation, CHEP/Brambles, Harmony and Sage.

A highlight of the world-class event included a talk by chairperson of the African Union, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who called for all students of the world to become members of Enactus. Dlamini-Zuma also urged business leaders to focus on women’s economic empowerment and to assist youth businesses to grow and be sustainable as global development is dependent upon the youth.

Enactus recognised South African business leaders and philanthropists, Patrice Motsepe and Doctor Precious Moloi-Motsepe for their efforts to advance the social entrepreneurship agenda. They were jointly awarded the 2015 Enactus Entrepreneurial Spirit Award.

The Enactus World Cup included live performances to celebrate the diverse culture of South Africa, with a performance of Richard Loring’s acclaimed African Footprint, as well as the accomplished Soweto Gospel Choir.

The 2016 Enactus World Cup will be held in Toronto, Canada from 28 to 30 September next year.
