Discworld fans pay a final tribute

ROSEBANK – ‘A shivering of worlds…’ the synopsis of the book begins. ‘Deep in the Chalk, something is stirring. The owls and the foxes can sense it, and Tiffany Aching feels it in her boots. An old enemy is gathering strength. There will be a reckoning…’

This is the sneak peek given to Discworld enthusiasts as Exclusive Books and Penguin Random House hosted the launch of the late, celebrated author Terry Pratchett’s newest, and sadly, last, novel titled The Shepherd’s Crown.

Pratchett – or Sir Terence David John ‘Terry’ Pratchett – was the creator of the much-loved Discworld series and sold more than 85 million books published in 37 different languages since becoming an author in 1971. He passed away 12 March, five months before the release of his last and highly anticipated novel.

The event was held on 10 October in Rosebank Mall and fans descended on the book shop dressed as their favourite Discworld character, from Tiffany Aching herself (Michelle Pike), to Nanny Ogg (Kelly Bouter), with Death standing in for the Hogfather (Marinda Lombard) even making an appearance. The Librarian remained unseen, however.

Winners of the best-dressed competition were as follows:

  • First place: Sam Vimes and Sam Junior – Chris Couperthwaite and Monique Hill
  • Second place: Granny Esmeralda Weatherwax – Meea Parkins
  • Third place: Rincewind and Luggage – David Moxham and Marissa Brits.

Themed prizes were also given after the Discworld pop quiz before the launch was concluded by book reviewer Varsha Lalla, who read an excerpt from the second chapter of the book.
