Braam parties in the streets

BRAAMFONTEIN - It was that time of the year when Streetfest returned to shut down the streets of Braamfontein.

It is not uncommon for the suburb to be inundated with visitors over the weekend and during festive periods, but this one was especially busy.

A number of different events took place in the area, with the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival buildup shows running from 2 to 3 October and the usual attractions of Neighbourgoods Market and Kitcheners.

This weekend was extra special, as it was time for Streetfest, the annual street bash that takes place and features a number of South African musicians and DJs.

Hosted by South Point Accommodation, the festival shut down Melle Street, between Smit and De Korte streets.

It was expected that more than 3 500 students would attend the event, but it was obvious by the masses of people who were perched on stairways, sidewalks and standing on the street that the numbers were way in excess of that.

The area began to fill from 2pm when gates opened, until much later when fans were treated to performances by Twins on Decks, Mobi Dixon, Maggs, Vigilante and KidX, among others.

The festival ran right through the night, with non-ticket buyers enjoying the music from outside the mesh fencing around the demarcated area.

Judging by the numbers in attendance and the response from the performers, a great time was had by all who attended, and even those who watched the show from beyond the enclosure. It became evident that Streetfest will live on for many years to come.
