Afriforum – New crime stats paint a dark picture

JOBURG – As the clock ticks down to Police Minister Nathi Nhleko's release of crime statistics today, Afriforum claims that the Gauteng crime stats have already been leaked to them and paint a dark picture.

Ian Cameron, head of Community Safety at AfriForum said, “Gauteng’s crime statistics were leaked to AfriForum months ago. These statistics force us back to reality.”

According to the civil rights organisation to the province’s crime statistics show the following:

  •  Murder increased by 10.2 percent
  •  Attempted murder increased by 9.3 percent
  •  Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 14.1 percent
  •  Car hijackings increased by 14.4 percent
  •  Truck hijackings increased by 54.5 percent
  •  House robberies increased by 14.4 percent
  •  Business robberies increased by 6.4 percent.

Cameron said, as a civil rights organisation, they expect drastic hikes in violent crime across South Africa. He claimed South Africa had seen an increase in these types of crimes since General Riah Phiyega’s appointment. Violent crimes include murder, attempted murder, house robberies, business robberies and car hijackings.

Cameron said, “When we compare Gauteng’s crime statistics of April 2013 to January 2014 with that of April 2014 to January 2015, a dark picture is predicted. It’s simple, Phiyega has to go.”

Meanwhile, the Congress of the People (Cope), urged Nhleko to take the country into his confidence and present a true reflection of the crime situation. Cope spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, said the minister must give citizens authentic crime statistics that are credible.

“If the minister has failed to implement the National Development Plan and that failure led to a rise in contact crimes, then he should go, and take Riah Phiyega with him. A failing minister and a failed commissioner of police allow criminals to take all of us hostage. If we continue to have a minister and a commissioner who are both inept, we will remain at the mercy of an army of dangerous criminals,” Bloem said.
