Lukewarm Pirates held to a draw

JOBURG - Mpumalanga Black Aces added salt to the wounds of Orlando Pirates after playing a one-all draw during a warm evening in Orlando Stadium on 18 September.

Orlando Pirates controlled the game in the first half with Mpho Makola breaking the deadlock for the Sea Robbers in the 21st minute; Makola’s goal was his fourth in four appearances.

Makola was later substituted and replaced by Sifiso Myeni after suffering an injury. Both teams went into the half-time break deadlocked at one-all, after Collins Mbesuma equalised for Black Aces in the dying minutes of the first half.

Black Aces came back from the second-half more organised and showed a lot of intent going forward. Mbesuma was a constant threat in the Pirates defence and in the 60th minute forced Felipe Ovono into a brilliant save.

Lebogang Manayama received a great cross from Thanduyise Khuboni in the the midfield but failed to capitalise.

Robyn Walters, in the 80th minute, produced a one-hand save from the curling effort of Thabo Matlaba from the left wing as Pirates piled on the pressure.

Walters was once again called into action in the last minute of the game when Kermit Erasmus and Lehlohonolo Majoro combined with brilliant pass interchange, but Walters was up to the task.

Walters won the man of the match award for keeping his team on the game.
