South Africa’s top brands honoured

HOUGHTON - The top brands in South Africa were commended for contributing to the country's image.

Brand South Africa and Brand Finance Africa recently announced the country’s top 50 corporate brands and commended them for boosting the country’s image.

Brand Africa conducted their annual study and found that the top 50 corporate brands in the country are valued at about R1.5 trillion.

“The brands really help drive our economy. It is also important to remember that these brands also play a big role in helping [South Africa’s] image,” said Thebe Ikalafeng, chairman of Brand Finance Africa.

Woolworths and First National Bank were tied as the top performers for the 2014/15 year. “Honestly it is an enormous honour and privilege to be recognised among some great brands in South Africa,” said the head of marketing at Woolworths, Kate Fordyce.

First National Bank has won the award four years in a row. Faye Mfikwe from the bank said, “This is a huge honour. We are very focused on our customer service and delivery. So this award has humbled us and it is great that our brand’s promise of ‘how can we help you’ is being followed through.”

Brand South Africa’s chief executive officer, Kingsley Makhubela, spoke about the top 50 brands in South Africa and how they have helped to build the country. “While developing, strengthening and maintaining a nation’s brand is a multifaceted task, there are a range of factors which can assist in positioning the nation positively. These factors, if based on a solid foundation, can help the… brand weather the storms posed by the global political and economic environment,” Makhubela said.

The top 10 corporate brands include the MTN Group, Vodacom, Sasol, Standard Bank, First National Bank, Woolworths, Nedbank, Absa, Investec and Mediclinic.
