Calling all local book lovers

PARKVIEW - ParkWords literary festival is back for its second year on Heritage Day.

The ParkWords Literary Festival last year takes place again on Heritage Day in Tyrone Avenue, Parkview.

ParkWords offers a great programme of events for adults and children throughout the day. Hosted by the Parkview Residents’ Association, the festival celebrates the literary talent of a number of prominent writers, authors, journalists and academics that reside in the suburb and surrounds. Book fans can indulge in informal literary talks and debates and listen to top authors discuss, debate and dissect serious and not so serious issues.

The participating authors and other ‘literary’ folk will include Achmat Dangor, Andrea Burgener, Arthur Goldstuck, Mondli Makhanya, Ben Williams, Bridget Hilton-Barber and Carlos Amato, to name a few.

Themes up for discussion will include, Beyond the fire pool, how South Africa works and could work a whole lot better; the Electricity debacle; football hooligans; and how TV and celebrity chefs have changed the way we eat and cook, among others.

There will be other activities such as The Johannesburg Heritage Association’s one-hour walk through Parkview’s past; Dov Fedler’s cartoon drawing workshop for children and teenagers; a literature quiz aimed at grade 8 to 10 pupils; a motorsport extravaganza; and entertainment for children celebrating the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland.

Attendees are requested to donate used books to the Parkview Library for the library to resell to raise funds for new books.

Tyrone Avenue will be closed between Ennis and Athlone roads. To avoid traffic congestion residents of Parkview are requested to walk to the event and those coming from further afield to park in adjoining streets.

The festival starts at 9.30am and ends at 9pm. Entrance is free.
