Getting Butch at Pirates

GREENSIDE - Pirate’s Sports Club hosted rugby legends Butch James and James Small for its annual Sportsman’s lunch.

The club hosts the event each year to raise money for its rugby Old Boys who are affectionately known as the Pirates Madalas.

James answered questions from the Madalas and added that he loved playing for the Springboks.

He expressed his gratitude to former Bok coach Jake White who he said believed in him enough to bring him back into the squad after a notable absence. James was a member of the winning 2007 World Cup Bok squad and said he had only fond memories of that experience.

Non Wellford, a member of Pirates, described James as humble and a very good ambassador for Springbok rugby. She said he gave of his time to the club’s junior players at their weekly practice.

“Everyone enjoyed the lunch and we had a great response,” said Hayley Illing, a spokesperson for the club.
