Meet the Lord of the Dance leads

JOBURG - It has been little more than a week since the cast of Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games landed in South Africa and they have nothing but good things to say about the beautiful country.

City Buzz sat down with Cathal Keaney, Lara Milner and Brea McGaffey at the luxurious Mowana Spa at the Indaba Hotel in Fourways.

The three lead cast members were able to take a few minutes out of their busy rehearsal time to chat to us about their experiences in the country so far, before heading to perform one of their eight shows this week.

McGaffey who hails from Detroit, USA, began dancing as a child during the time when Lord of the Dance had just opened – an extra-curricular activity that all the kids of Irish descent took part in.

Milner, from Belfast in Ireland, was exposed to dancing from the time she was born, as her mother was her Irish dancing teacher. However, Keaney, who grew up in Galway, West of Ireland, had a different motive for becoming an Irish dancer. “My mom wanted me and my brother to have a bit of rhythm because my father couldn’t dance, so she decided to send us to dance classes,” he explained.

Since landing in the country, the cast has been taking on some serious rehearsal hours to familiarise themselves with the stage and deliver South Africa with the most stunning performances – with the quality of the show being something that the audience actually contributes towards.

WATCH our interview with the cast members below:

“The crowds here have been so amazing and enthusiastic, and that always gets us through the shows and it pumps us up – when the crowds are so good,” said McGaffey.

Admittedly, the cast was unsure of what to expect here, but they explained that the dangerous reputation of the country does not do South Africa service.

“Since we’ve been here I have not once felt unsafe and the people are so friendly. I’m pleasantly surprised and I’d definitely come back,” said McGaffey.

The cast has only taken a short trip to the Lion Park so far, but with suggestions from <ct:Italic>City Buzz they are even considering touring Joburg central.
