Top Billing presenter Lorna Maseko goes to chef school

JOBURG - Presenter of Top Billing, choreographer and dancer, Lorna Maseko will soon add chef to her list of attainments.

Maseko, who resides in Morningside, wants to explore the culinary arts and grow her love of cooking. Since her appearance in Celebrity Masterchef SA, Maseko decided that she wanted to go to cooking school.

“After Masterchef I realised that I really enjoy cooking and find it somewhat therapeutic,” she said.

“Going to cooking school will just refine my passion and turn it into a culinary art.”

After she completes the year-long course, Maseko aims to grow her series of Cooking With Lorna and Friends events, and later she will look at possibly hosting cooking lessons along with a cooking show that is in the pipeline.

“My friends know that I love hosting dinners and little soirees, so it’s all part of fuelling different facets of my personality, and cooking is one of them,” she said.

Maseko has been approached by a few stakeholders regarding opening a restaurant. “I’m working on a cooking show and looking at other properties that can be explored within the food space,” added Maseko.

“But in due time it will all fall into place.”

She enjoys making what she calls soul food. “I’m a home cook, so I love making soul-type food,” she explained.

She wants to eventually learn how to make French-style food – but with a South African twist. “Who knows, I might own the first South African Michelin Star restaurant,” quipped Maseko.

Some of the chefs she looks up to include Heston Blumenthal, Marco Pierre White and South African chef, David Higgs of 500 at The Saxon.

Maseko draws her inspiration in the kitchen from watching different TV cooking shows, seeing something in a cookbook or going to a restaurant.

“It all sparks something in me to want to explore in the kitchen,” concluded Maseko.
