Car guards tell all

GREENSIDE - Car guards in Greenside have come under fire lately from residents who frequent the famous restaurant strip in the area, however, some of the guards have spoken out about the bad reputation they have been lumbered with.

One resident who wished to remain anonymous said, “Many of the car guards are peaceful and well-behaved, however, two guards are constantly harassing customers and insulting and shouting [at them]. The other major problem is one of the car guards actually sells drugs in the evenings.”

Happiness Tshabalala, a car guard working along Greenway Road, confirmed that some car guards were indeed troublesome, however, he urged residents and shop owners to not lump all car guards together. “Not all of us are the same, and we don’t all harass customers,” he said.

Tshabalala, who works from 9am to 5pm, said that mostly the problems with car guards were experienced in the evenings, and it wasn’t a regular occurrence.

Another car guard who requested anonymity said, “It is usually chaos here at night, people walk around smoking and getting high.”

He added that alcohol and drugs were the number one cause of violence associated with car guards in the area, adding that this only started after 6pm when the area was busier.

Many businesses had no problems with the car guards. An employee who wished to remain anonymous said, “To be honest, there is only one car guard who troubles a lot of people. But the others are very honest and hardworking.”

Jenna Hiscock a business owner in the area said, “I think they’re great. They have never harassed me, and most people are comfortable with them.”

Another car guard in the area, Sifiso Hlatshwayo said, “All we expect is to be treated like human beings and not nuisances. We are not playing. The money we make here is to buy food and sometimes pay for rent.”

Parkview police spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said only one case had been opened against a car guard in the past few months.

Ramovha urged residents to contact the police if they had any problems.
