A fight for the hockey premier league title

CRAIGHALL PARK - AFTER finishing as runners-up last year, the Old Edwardian men's hockey team is determined to do better this season, and after 10 matches they are joint top of the log with The Wanderers on 25 points.

In third place is The University of Johannesburg, at 24 points, with a game in hand on Old Eds.

Thornton McDade, player and coach of the Old Edwardian men’s hockey team said, “The team has changed quite a bit since last season. We are developing as a squad and have managed to implement a variety of structures and playing styles which is testament to a group of quality and committed players.”

McDade explained that there had been a number of one-sided matches with the only real competition coming from the university and Wanderers.

When asked if one-sided matches were good for hockey in Gauteng, McDade said, “The Southern Gauteng Hockey Association needs to continually relook at what they are trying to achieve as a province and find a suitable solution to ensuring competitive hockey all season round in the various leagues.

“However, consistency should be the deciding factor so that we don’t see too many changes from season to season.”

With return matches still to be played against the top teams, it looks as though the title will be decided on the results of these return matches, McDade concluded.
