ConHill is going green

BRAAMFONTEIN – Constitution Hill has partnered up with the City of Johannesburg to host the second annual ConHill Green Festival.

The theme for this year is Our City, Our Environment – Should We Care?, and aims to create awareness and educate the youth about environmental sustainability. It also happens to coincide with Global Environmental Week.

“Constitution Hill is the beacon of human rights, democracy and constitutionalism, therefore it is our mandate to uphold every human right that there is,” said Bandile Fakude, Heritage, Education and Tourism manager for Constitution Hill. “What inspired us to start the Green Festival is affirming section 24 of the Constitution which states the right to a healthy and safe environment for all.”

There will be a number of activities taking place during the festival including a panel discussion that will address the roles that youth play in environmental sustainability. The discussion will be facilitated by former international footballer and renowned analyst Christophe Bongo.

The Recycled Art Exhibition will also be launched at the festival. Artists such as Mbongeni Buthelezi, Vusi Mfupi and Prof. Pitika Ntuli will showcase their work in re-purposing and giving new life to discarded items.

There will also be a children’s workshop, a Green Expo and even a fashion show. “It’s green or recycled fashion. It’s not something people are used to … it will blow people’s minds away,” Fakude hinted.

Constitution Hill Acting CEO Themba Ntuli said, “This event is significant in that it upholds the values of the Constitution. The festival aims to leave a lasting education legacy, which includes various programmes which will take place post the event. This includes a schools outreach programme and workshops for learners.”

The ConHill Green Festival will take place from 1 – 3 June at Constitution Hill, 11 Kotze Street, Braamfontein.
