Public roads becoming public toilets

CRAIGHALL PARK - A RECENT picture posted on the Craighall Park Facebook page, begs the question whether urinating in public is a criminal offence.

According Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, public urination breaks a number of bylaws, and is illegal.

“Urinating in public is a bylaw infringement, and falls under the public indecency act,” said Mamonyane.

If caught, the person can be fined, she confirmed.

Station commander Colonel Nanda Moodley said R300 was the maximum amount a person could be fined for urinating in public. “Admission of guilt is set by the local magistrates’ court,” he said.

On the topic of public intoxication, Moodley added, “Drunkenness is not a crime, however a person can get arrested if they start acting in a disorderly manner, or if they are a danger to themselves and those around them.”

He confirmed that drunken behaviour also carried a heavy fine of R300.

What are some of the other bylaw infringements that you think should be taken more seriously?
