A place for young and old

Wits first-year geology students were taken on a field trip to Melville Koppies where students visited 10 different areas on the koppies, each manned by Wits lecturers, to introduce them to some of the facets of geology.

“The tour was also an introduction to field work which is an integral part of what geologists have to do,” explained Wendy Carstens, a volunteer at Melville Koppies.

Interactive tours are held every Sunday and children over six are welcome.

Melville Koppies also offers three-hour hikes, group guided tours and dog walks, which are great for a day out with the whole family. The tours range from 4km to 10 km and require a reasonable level of fitness.
