Parkhurst’s best pavement competition

PARKHURST - A resident on 21st Street in Parkhurst has been named the winner of the annual best pavement competition.

The competition started in 2009 and is run by property company Nan Roberts Estates, in association with the Parkhurst Residents’ and Business Owners’ Association (PRABOA).

In recent months, Parkhurst, like many surrounding suburbs, has seen their pavements being dug up for the installation of the fibre optic network.

Nan Robert’s had considered not running the competition as a result of this disruption, but it was ultimately decided that in the spirit of promoting awareness and pedestrian-friendly pavements, the competition would continue.

Residents were invited to vote online for the finalists. The main aim of the competition is to promote beautiful and pedestrian-friendly pavements.

The 2014 winner was announced as Marie Grey of 21st Street.

Grey noted that the cork screw trees were a unique feature of the pavement, and something she inherited when she bought the house several years ago.

“The corkscrew trees are well recognised in the neighbourhood, and they are not something that are easily maintained,” she said.

Grey also acknowledged her gardener Wellington Thupah for the upkeep of the pavement.

Although the notion of a ‘best pavement award’ may at first glance sound trivial, pavements form a part of the public space in the suburbs.

According to Micheal Capela, director of Nan Roberts Estates, “[The competition is also important] for the safety of pedestrians. We regularly walk in Parkhurst to promote our village-like community spirit.”

Do you think that Parkhurst is more pedestrian friendly than other neighbouring suburbs?
