Rand Girls reach out

PARKTOWN - Pupils of Rand Girls' High School hosted girls from The House Group for a year-end get together event.

The House Group is an organisation that helps rehabilitate young girls who have been trafficked, orphaned or abandoned.

According to Riana Gaspar, the organisation is registered as a shelter and caters specifically for teenage girls aged between 12 and 18 years old.

Their aim is to provide stability for the young girls who have experienced trauma and to reintegrate them into society. When a girl is brought in they are given medical and psychological evaluation and are catered to depending on their profile. Each girl falls into a different programme depending on their needs.

“We try to make them contributing members of society,” said Gaspar.

At the event, the girls were given a tour of Rand Girls’ High School, treated to a dance performance, games and lunch with pupils of the school.

“This special occasion was to celebrate the relationship between the school and the organisation and to pay it forward to those in need,” said Ilonka Poole, a teacher at Rand Girls.

The school adopted The House Group as one of the projects undertaken by its social responsibility group, formed earlier this year.
