Canoe league’s final race

EMMARENTIA - The Gauteng Canoe Union School League ended the season of monthly races on 8 November at Emmarentia Dam, where the overall prize giving for the year was hosted.

Pupils from a wide variety of primary and high schools participate in the school league – coaching and training at nearby dams, lakes and canoe clubs. Points are awarded on a sliding scale for each race completed, from winner to last finisher. The points accumulated at the end of the year dictate the individual winners, as well as the top schools represented out of more than 60, in addition to the top club points achievers.

Parktown Girls High School, who recognise canoeing as a school sport, won the second high school position, with Hoerskool Parys in first place and St Davids Marist Inanda in third place for the high school category.

The local club at Emmarentia Dam, where the St Davids juniors are trained and coached, won the top club award with the Parys canoe club in 2nd, and Florida Lake in 3rd.

In the individual prize giving for this year, based on accumulated points and consistent participation, Pooja Satyaprakesh from Parktown Girls won the top U16 girl award, with Daniella Goldschagg in second, and Kate Brokensha third. Daniella Afonso won the second place U18 girls for the year.
