Camps for children with cancer

SAXONWOLD - Just Footprints is a charitable organisation dedicated to enriching the life experiences of children with serious health or life challenges.

The foundation reaches out to children who struggle with hardships ranging from serious illness, abuse and poverty.

In the past five years the organisation has hosted 42 camps around the country for children with cancer and their siblings. The camps help the children to broaden their life experiences with their peers.

Just Footprints mostly works with underprivileged children, and the camps are sponsored through the generosity of corporate entities.

“We get a lot of our [camp attendees] from the major public hospitals, Steve Biko, Chris Hani and Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital”, said Leoné Jooste chairperson of the foundation which is based in Saxonwold.

“We cater to their needs, and children are required not to be on treatment for their cancer at the time of attending the camp.”

In addition to the psycho-social support provided at the camp, various fun and educational activities are also included. Jooste said a pediatric oncologist, a social worker, student volunteers and care staff familiar with the children’s routines also attend the camp.

She noted that at the end of the camps, children often return with a noticeable change in their attitude and have enhanced self esteem.

Sophie Ndhlovo of the Choc Childhood Cancer Foundation said, “Children suffering with cancer live everyday as a rigid routine and camp allows for them to break away.”

The foundation is currently fundraising to build its own camp site in the Dinokeng game reserve with specialised facilities. The camp will have a medical unit, be fully wheelchair accessible and will be designed to be environmentally friendly.
