Wits to host annual investigative journalism conference
PARKTOWN – Wits University will host their annual, Power Reporting – The African Investigative Journalism Conference in November.
The largest gathering of investigative journalists in Africa will take place at Wits from 3 to 5 November. It is a three-day event at which African journalists can develop their skills from the expert knowledge of 40 speakers across 60 sessions.
Highlights for this year include:
• Jock McCulloch, author of South Africa’s Gold Mines and the Politics of Silicosis, on the spin that mining companies put on the ill health of miners.
• The Financial Times’ former West Africa correspondent, Tom Burgis on Spies, oil and diamonds – and China’s middleman in Africa.
• Also from West Africa, Rafael Marques de Morais from the anti-corruption watchdog Maka Angola will present the Carlos Cardoso Memorial Lecture on freedom of expression.
• Brant Houston, Knight Chair in Investigative and Enterprise Reporting, University of Illinois, will present on Reporting Ebola using maps and data.
• Anya Schriffin on her new book Global Muckraking – 100 years of investigative journalism from around the world.
The annual conference is hosted by Wits Journalism’s Investigative Journalism Workshop and forms part of the Global Investigative Journalism Network.
