No pleasure trip to Sun City

NATURENA – A group of Greenside High School teenage boys were taken on a visit to the Johannesburg Correctional Centre.

This was part of Parkview police’s Social Crime Prevention Projects under the guidance of Sergeant Iris Phoko. The boys visited cells in the men and women sections of Sun City, as the prison is better known.

The prison was given the name Sun City due to its transport arrangements where visitors are shuttled to their relevant visiting areas, an arrangement similar to that of visitors to the luxurious Sun City luxury casino and resort.

The pupils visited overcrowded men and women’s sections of the prison where they listened to inmates telling their stories behind their incarceration. Inmates encouraged the pupils to keep away from a life of drugs and crime. Pupils were also treated to a play by inmates which highlighted the reality of prison life and the consequences of crime.

Parkview police spokesperson, Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha said the experience was one the pupils would remember for a long time. “We hope this exercise helps in moulding the pupils as responsible and law-abiding future leaders,” he said.
