KES are third-time inter-high champs

PRETORIA - KING Edward VII School won the athletics inter-high for a third consecutive year.

The Boys’ Schools Inter High Athletics meeting took place at Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in Pretoria on 27 September.

According to local punters and media, King Edward went into the meeting as the firm favourite, as the Kes athletes had so far finished first in every meeting this season.

However, the pressure would be on the 2012 and 2013 champions to retain the inter-high title for a third consecutive year.

Hosts, Affies, and Jeppe High School for Boys ensured that the King Edward athletes worked very hard for this 2014 win and this made for an extremely exciting and thrilling event.

After event 40, Kes were trailing, but the athletes were focused on the task ahead and knew how they had planned to finish.

At the start of the 200m events, Kes athletes started to press home. After winning three out of five of the 1500m, Kes took the points lead. The 400m events had Kes winning two and finishing no worse than second in the other 400m races.

It was going down to the wire and that meant that the relay team events were going to be the most exciting of the day. Kes finished in style, winning three of the relays, and finished second in one relay event. Furthermore Kes broke two relay inter-high records.

Final results eventually had Kes as comfortable winners in the A Team competition, with a 32-point difference between the runners-up, Affies.

It was, however, only a one-point difference between Affies and Jeppe High School for Boys, which saw the hosts grabbing second place and Jeppe third.

In the B Team competition, Jeppe took a well-deserved first place, followed closely behind by Affies with Kes taking third place.

In total, Kes won 25 events, Affies 20 and Jeppe 13.
