Old Eds water polo clubs turns 80

HOUGHTON - Old Eds will celebrate 80 years of water polo at the club at its annual festival.

The festival will take place at King Edward V11 school pool from 9 to 12 October.

OJ Eagles which have dominated Gauteng water polo for several years will fight to retain their crown, while hosts Old Eds will push to play in the final.

Other men’s teams that will be in action are University of Cape Town (UCT), Pretoria High School Old Boys, Wits University, Rondebosch Boys High, University of Pretoria (Tukkies), Vikings and Stellenbosch University (Maties).

It is expected that about 12 or 13 current Springboks will be taking part including Dwayne Flatscher, Etienne Le Roux, Devon Card, Ignardus Badenhorst, Nicolas Rodda and Joao Marco de Carvalho.

Six teams will take part in the women’s event including an invitational team coached by Gareth Samuels.

According to Mike Dunk, communications officer for Old Eds, it is anticipated that the invitational team could become the Old Eds women’s team in the near future.

“This is something that the club has been striving for over the past few years,” he said.

Again, OJ Eagles women’s team will also be a force to be reckoned with, but they will be challenged by UCT, Tukkies, Maties and Tridents.

“There will a strong representation of international referees led by Gus Pinker and Dion Willis, both of whom have had many years of international experience including working at the Olympic Games and World Water Polo Championships,” said Dunk.

“This is an opportunity to see top class water polo, and there will be plenty of food and refreshments available throughout the tournament.”
