KES lives up to the challenge

HOUGHTON - King Edward VII School has set the bar for schools taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

After King Edward VII School headmaster, David Lovatt, took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in August, the school also raised and donated R6 000 to the J9 Foundation.

The J9 Foundation is a charity devoted to Motor Neuron Disease (MND) issues.

After being diagnosed with the fatal illness, Joost van der Westhuizen established the foundation in an effort to aid those suffering from the same disease.

The money collected was donated by the KES school boys, the Old Boys’ Association and the Old Eds Society.

Lovatt, head prefect John Fourie, and his deputies handed over the cheques to Pieter van der Westhuizen and Claire Kaye-Grobler of the J9 Foundation.

Pieter, Joost’s brother, said the donation would contribute to the research in finding an eventual cure for MND.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge involves dumping a bucket of ice water on someone’s head to promote awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – also known as MND – and to encourage donations for research.

The KES headmaster challenged headmasters from rival schools including Parktown Boys’, Jeppe Boys’ and Pretoria Boys’ high schools to get drenched with a bucket of icy water to support the initiative.
