UJ stays on top of varsity football

THE final games of the Varsity Football season had fans on the edge of their seats.

This week saw top teams North West University (NWU) and University of Johannesburg (UJ) continue their fight as both remain top of the log.

The Varsity Football clash between NWU and UJ in Mafikeng ended in a tense 1-1 draw, which means that both teams maintain their unbeaten status this season, with a goal difference separating them in the standings.

Both sides missed opportunities, with NWU’s Tshenolo Machwisa pulling his shot wide and UJ’s Ruben de Freitas’ attempt being deflected by the crossbar.

However, UJ took the lead when a long ball fell for De Freitas, who showed great composure to send his volley past goalkeeper Amogelang Maduo.

NWU managed to level matters shortly after when Lindani Dudula buried a penalty after a heavy challenge from UJ goalkeeper Mduduzi Khumalo.

The game opened up as both teams threw everything at each other in the final stages, but neither could find a way past the 1-1 deadlock.

Grant Bruchhausen was named FNB Man of the Match.

In Cape Town, Varsity Football fans saw Free State’s Kovsies securing a 2-0 win over the Cape side while the University of Western Cape surprised titleholders University of Pretoria-Tuks with a 2-1 win in Bellville.

Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University moved up to third place on the Varsity Football standings with a 3-0 victory over Limpopo University in Port Elizabeth.

The seventh round of Varsity Football will roll out from 1 September in Cape Town, Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg.
