Couple celebrates 70-year anniversary with a selfie

KILLARNEY – Killarney residents Sylvia and Solly Jossel tied the knot in 1944 and celebrated seven decades of marriage in August.

Solly celebrated his 100th birthday in July.

The couple have been residents of the suburb for more than three decades. They have three children, 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Sylvia (89) described how they met. “I was in the army and I was standing on the corner waiting for a troop carrier to take me to the depo,” she said. “Solly walked past, he was with a friend and he said ‘oh that’s a nice lady’ and his friend who happened to know me introduced us.”

Sylvia described it as love at first sight, “We knew that we were meant for each other,” she said. Shortly after their first meeting, Solly contacted Sylvia to invite her on a date. “That was the start of our romance,” she recalled.

Solly attributed his lengthy life span to his Creator. He believes he has been blessed due to the amount of charity work he continues to do, even in his old age. “I’m very fortunate, the Lord has been very good to me by giving me many years.”

How did he propose? Sylvia said, “I was due to go to Egypt during the war years and Solly said to me,‘If you get out of going to Egypt, I’ll make you a South African mommy instead of an Egyptian mummy’ and we shared our first kiss,” she recalled.

The glue that has held them together for such a long time was understanding and loving each other, said Sylvia. “I wish I could have another 70 years,” she concluded, before taking a selfie with her husband.
