Old Eds squash player third in SA Champs

ILLOVO - Old Edwardians' Thoboki Mohohlo had a great week of squash at the South African National Championship played at Wanderers in Illovo, finishing third overall.

A class field of 32 players vied for the title held by Steve Coppinger, with Mohohlo seeded in the 3/4 bracket.

After a comfortable first round against Jarryd Carter, which he won by three games to love, Mohohlo’s first test was against Neil van der Merwe.

After winning the first two games with something to spare, he was guilty of some loose serving, which caused him to lose the third game 10-12, but he quickly recovered in the fourth game to close out the match 3-1.

He was dominant in beating his quarter-final opponent, Devon Hendrikse 3-0 before coming up against the formidable Shaun le Roux, who proved to be too strong and more consistent, thus ending Mohohlo’s challenge.

Le Roux then went on to dethrone Coppinger to win his first national title.

Thereafter, Mohohlo beat Gary Naidoo in the play off for third and fourth place, but not before letting a 2-0 lead slip to be pegged back to all, before running away with the fifth game 11-5 to claim third place.

Moholo had gained valuable knowledge during his overseas play earlier this year and this proved to be a foundation for his great week at the championship.
