ConHill BARS dialogue postponed

BRAAMFONTEIN - The BARS: The Price of Freedom dialogue that was to form part of Constitution Hill's Colours of a Woman weekend has been postponed.

The dialogue that will commemorate the former female prisoners who took a stand in 1956, as well as bring in the voices of the ex-wardresses, was to take place on 8 August.

Heritage site spokesperson Bontle Mokoka said the dialogue will happen on 31 August.

“We felt terrible for turning people away due to the overwhelming interest and response received. We came to the conclusion that it’s best to postpone the event… to accommodate more people,” said Mokoka.

“We would like to take this opportunity to showcase and shine a spotlight on the first ever Mzansi Women’s Film Festival taking place at Constitution Hill from 8 to 9 August.”

The dialogue, a “high tea event”, will be hosted by Power FM producer, Zamantungwa Khumalo.

“Sizoya Sibuye, a women’s organisation made up of female ex-prisoners from the notorious apartheid prisons – Number Four, Old Fort, Women’s Gaol – are partners in this momentous event, and will provide inspirational speakers who will share experiences behind the Women’s Gaol bars,” said Mokaka.

“All of this will be complemented by poetry and other artistic performances in honour of the history preserved in the old women’s jail.”

BARS: The Price of Freedom will take place on 31 August at the Women’s Gaol, Constitution Hill, 11 Kotze Street, Braamfontein, from 11am until 3pm.
